We Could Have Done That We could have built a boat and come from far away. We could have put down roots in Massachusetts Bay. We could have formed assemblies that gave us all a voice. We could have designed a government that preserves our choice. We could have come together and overcome our fears. We could have done that in two hundred and fifty years. We could have sought tolerance, separated church and state. We could have celebrated difference, fought oppression, overcome hate. We could have sought our freedom from a king who ruled from a tower. We could have written a document that balances rights and powers. We could have come together and overcome our fears. We could have done that in two hundred and fifty years. We could have fought a bloody war over division and slavery. But it would take a special leader with special bravery. We could have created opportunity and opened Ellis Island’s door. We could have created protections to help the workers and the poor. We could have come together and overcome our fears. We could have done that in two hundred and fifty years. We could have ended Jim Crow with economic and legal tools we could have grown diversity through employment and the schools. We could have real equality and followed the Preamble we wrote. We could have improved safety nets and the systems we use to vote. We could have come together and overcome our fears. We could have done that in two hundred and fifty years.
