I’ve had a slum life,
integrated busing 
from America pie 
gave a slice of nothing 

I picked myself up
from playground fights,
some times I went hungry
on  winter nights.

My momma used to say
as she tucked me in bed,
with a few simple words
to keep in my  head:

A moment before 
becomes a moment later.
